What is cataract?

Cataract is the clouding of lens (becomes less transparent) inside eye which leads to decrease in the vision. It is one of the most common causes of vision loss in the world. Cataract is related to ageing and it affects older people mostly.

How to deal with Cataract Surgery?

If you feel that the vision is decreasing you can seek consultation with an eye specialist and can determine the cause of eye problem. If the cause is cataract then the doctor may recommend you for a cataract surgery.

With cataract surgery the eye's natural lens is being replaced with the clear artificial lens implant called Intraocular lens or IOL. The surgery is an outpatient process and doesn't require an overnight stay.

Before Cataract Surgery.....

Some test will be done before the surgery. A-scan test will be performed to measure the length of eye and this measurement will help the surgeon to select the appropriate eye implant. You still can undergo cataract surgery if you have had LASIK or other vision correction procedure. Provide the vision correction details to your Surgeon so that they can calculate the correct IOL prescription for you.

Before the surgery its advisable to inform your ophthalmologist about the medicines and supplements you are taking. Since some medications may restrict pupil from dilating properly while having surgery. According to the medications the surgeon may adapt the surgical process for a successful cataract surgery. Antibiotic eyedrops may be recommended for you before two days of surgery to reduce the risk of inflammation.

Cataract Surgery Delhi

Most commonly used procedure for removing the cataract is known as  phacoemulsification (Micro Incision Cataract Surgery). A tiny incision is made in the side of the cornea, then a small instrument that uses high frequency ultrasound is then inserted to break cloudy lens and carefully remove it.

The cloudy lens is then removed with a IOL implant made of silicone, plastic or acrylic. The IOL then becomes the inevitable part of eye. Once the IOL is placed the surgeon close the incision.

Risks and Complications....

As with every surgery some risks are involved in this surgery too.

Some of the risks are :

  • Infection.
  • Swelling of Retina and Cornea.
  • Bleeding inside the eye.
  • Increased pressure inside the eye – glaucoma
